Travel insurance once journey has started?

I’ve discovered my travel insurance does not cover my current trip. I am going on a 8 month career break/ gap year trip. Have been trying to find policies online but, whilst some companies offer gap year/ backpacker cover for long trips, they all say that they do not cover travel which has already begun.

Help! Surely there must be some way of finding cover – after all, don’t people extend their holidays from time to time? Please could anyone let me know if you know of an insurer that would offer cover for both lengthy trips and trips which have already begun. (My trip starts and ends in London).
Thanks guys but it would be too expensive to take a 12 hour flight back to London, and insurers also demand you start and end in the same country (UK if a UK insurer) so taking it out at next stop wouldn’t work…

Start a new trip from the next stop and file for the insurance before you leave that stop.
